Last year,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ccjdigital.com\/technology\/cybersecurity\/article\/15658371\/an-inside-look-at-estes-express-lines-cyberattack-recovery#:~:text=It%20took%20Estes%20Express%20Lines,operations%20following%20a%20%2029\">Estes Express Lines<\/a>\u00a0was hit by a cyberattack that froze its freight operations for nearly a week. Around the same time, Ward Transport &amp; Logistics confirmed it had been targeted too, forcing temporary shutdowns across its systems.<\/p>\n<p>Then, in July 2024, a faulty global software update from CrowdStrike caused IT systems to crash across industries \u2013 grounding flights, freezing logistics networks, and exposing just how dependent critical operations have become on interconnected technology.<\/p>\n<p>Each of these incidents underscores a new reality: IT outages and cyber threats are now business threats. The transportation and logistics sector \u2013 once seen as an unlikely target \u2013 is now one of the most vulnerable industries to cyber disruption.<\/p>\n<p>IBM\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/reports\/threat-intelligence\">X-Force Threat Intelligence Index\u00a0<\/a>ranks transportation among the top five most-attacked sectors globally, accounting for roughly 7% of all observed incidents. Verizon\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.verizon.com\/business\/resources\/reports\/dbir\/?cmp=2025:05:ge:us::ns:pre:pse:goo::ao:8888855284:_ds_cid_12663792230_ds_agid_120689634176&amp;utm_term=2024%20dbir%20verizon&amp;utm_medium=cpc&amp;utm_source=google&amp;utm_campaign=GGL_BND_Security_Exact&amp;utm_content=Enterprise&amp;gclsrc=aw.ds&amp;gad_source=1&amp;gad_campaignid=12663792230&amp;gbraid=0AAAAABymyRHiyxrtmJ9LZxAnfyU5q03DA&amp;gclid=CjwKCAjwxrLHBhA2EiwAu9EdMysm3bIfFD6PpSLrPS-HN_LMIFjgiIQQiOfKK58WufYxERzG0QQBWxoC-EwQAvD_BwE\">2025 Data Breach Investigations Report<\/a>\u00a0paints a similar picture: nearly half (44%) of breaches involved ransomware, and 60% of breaches stemmed from third-party compromises \u2013 a common scenario in logistics networks where partners exchange sensitive data across dozens of platforms. The cost of a breach in transportation\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/reports\/data-breach\">now averages $4.4 million<\/a>, according to IBM.<\/p>\n<h2>Legacy systems: The hidden points of failure<\/h2>\n<p>Many fleets still run dispatch, routing, and maintenance systems built a decade ago \u2013 or longer. These legacy platforms weren\u2019t designed for a connected era and often lack modern security controls, making them easy prey for attackers.<\/p>\n<p>Take electronic logging devices (ELDs). Researchers at the University of Tulsa demonstrated how attackers could hack into certain ELD models in under a minute from a nearby vehicle, installing malware capable of spreading truck to truck. The study found that poorly secured Bluetooth connections, hardcoded passwords, and lack of firmware validation left devices wide open to exploitation.<\/p>\n<p>For fleets, that means the same tools used to keep drivers compliant and efficient can also serve as entry points for cyber intruders. Combine that with outdated on-premise dispatch systems and unsupported operating systems \u2013 sometimes running 24\/7 with no patch cycles \u2013 and you\u2019ve got an ecosystem built on risk.<\/p>\n<p>The challenge is compounded by interconnectedness. Fleets exchange data daily with brokers, shippers, and 3PLs. One weak link &#8211; say, a broker\u2019s compromised FTP server or an exposed API &#8211; can quickly cascade into a full-blown fleet shutdown. As Verizon\u2019s data shows, supply-chain-linked breaches are on the rise, and logistics firms are particularly susceptible due to their sprawling integrations.<\/p>\n<h2>Security by design, not by patchwork<\/h2>\n<p>Too many organizations still treat cybersecurity as a bolt-on problem. They install firewalls or endpoint tools after an incident, patching over vulnerabilities instead of addressing their root causes. But reactive fixes create a false sense of safety.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s needed now is security by design \u2013 an architectural mindset that builds protection into every layer of operations. For fleet IT leaders, that means:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Segmenting networks to prevent lateral movement if an endpoint is compromised.<\/li>\n<li>Implementing zero-trust frameworks, where every system interaction is verified.<\/li>\n<li>Encrypting all data in transit and at rest, including ELD and telematics transmissions.<\/li>\n<li>Limiting access through role-based permissions, so employees and partners only see what they need.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Migrating to cloud-first architectures can help. Cloud systems typically provide regular security patches, redundancy, and continuous monitoring \u2013 features that legacy servers can\u2019t easily replicate. According to IBM\u2019s 2025 report, organizations that adopted extensive security AI and automation saw an average of $1.9 million lower breach costs compared to those that didn\u2019t \u2013 making it clear: this isn\u2019t just IT resilience, it\u2019s a business advantage.<\/p>\n<h2>Building a cyber aware culture<\/h2>\n<p>Technology alone won\u2019t solve the problem. The weakest link is often human. According to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cisa.gov\/topics\/cybersecurity-best-practices\/multifactor-authentication\">CISA<\/a>, enabling multi-factor authentication makes users \u201c99% less likely to be hacked.\u201d Yet, too many fleet organizations still rely on single passwords and shared logins across dispatch and telematics tools.<\/p>\n<p>To build a cyber-aware culture, fleets must:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mandate MFA and strong password policies across all systems.<\/li>\n<li>Conduct regular employee training on phishing and cyber hygiene, especially for dispatchers and drivers who use connected apps on the road.<\/li>\n<li>Run periodic security audits and penetration tests to uncover weaknesses before attackers do.<\/li>\n<li>Develop a clear incident response plan \u2013 with defined roles, communication steps, and recovery procedures.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Estes\u2019 response during it cyberattack offers a playbook worth noting for fleets: within 90 minutes of detecting the intrusion, the carrier cut off network access, isolated systems, and deployed an incident response team. That decisive action limited further damage and helped the company resume partial operations sooner than expected.<\/p>\n<h2>Cybersecurity as a competitive advantage<\/h2>\n<p>The evolution of connected logistics &#8212; from predictive routing to AI-driven planning \u2013 has expanded both opportunities and risks. As fleets digitize, the attack surface grows. But those that embed cybersecurity into their operational DNA will emerge stronger, more efficient, and more trusted by customers.<\/p>\n<div id=\"content-body-15773124\" class=\"page-contents__content-body\">\n<p>Cyber resilience is now a core pillar of business continuity. It protects not only dispatch systems and shipment data but also the brand equity built on reliability and trust.
